POSITION OVERVIEW

Salary range: Salary will be commensurate with experience. The posted UC academic salary scales (https://www.ucop.edu/academic-personnel-programs/compensation/2022-23-academic-salary-scales.html) set the minimum pay determined by rank and/or step at appointment. See the following table for the salary scale for this position: https://www.ucop.edu/academic-personnel-programs/_files/2022-23/oct-2022-salary-scales/t2.pdf. A reasonable estimate for this position is $70,800–$82,200.

Percent time: 100%

Anticipated start: Screening of applicants begins immediately and will continue as needed. Appointments for fall semester are usually reviewed in May, and for spring semester in November (if applicable).

Review timeline: The pool will remain in place for one calendar year; those interested in remaining in the pool beyond that time must reapply.

POSITION DESCRIPTION

The University of California, Berkeley, School of Optometry invites applications for a pool of qualified optician instructor/s in the school’s eyewear dispensary should an opening arise. The number of positions varies from semester to semester, depending on the needs of the department. The optician instructor/s will be working directly with patients as well as teaching Doctor of Optometry candidates/students in ophthalmic dispensary skills.

The applicant we seek will be highly proficient and experienced in all aspects of optical dispensary operations and capable of providing effective guidance and instruction to our students in the context of a high volume optical department. The successful candidate will supervise optometry student clinicians in our clinic, prepare and deliver seminars on a variety of relevant optical related topics in concert with other optician instructors, and have primary responsibility for teaching and evaluating those students.

QUALIFICATIONS

Basic qualifications (required at time of application)
American Board of Opticianry Certified (ABOC) optician (or equivalent national or international certification or degree).

Additional qualifications (required at time of start)
Three years of optical experience in a dispensing and/or laboratory environment. Experience working with ophthalmic frames, lens materials, and lens designs and technologies. Employment is contingent on successful completion of a Background Check. To be eligible to work, clinic employees must comply with all UC Berkeley Optometry Clinic annual immunization and medical screening requirements, trainings , and University and School policies.

Preferred qualifications
Experience in training optical professionals strongly preferred. Opticianry Advanced Certification (ABOC-AC) , American Board of Optician Masters (ABOM), undergraduate degree, or laboratory experience. Ability to provide and demonstrate the highest caliber of patient service and create appropriate visual solutions to meet each patient’s specific visual needs. Candidates with teaching and technical training of opticianry experience. Looking for candidates interested in the cutting edge of ophthalmic technology.
