POSITION SUMMARY:
A paraprofessional who provides basic breastfeeding education and encouragement to WIC Peer Counselor Program (PCP) participants by providing individual and group breastfeeding education, phone calls, WIC clinic visits and maintaining records. Provide nutrition and breastfeeding counseling and education to low risk WIC participants. Provide peer-counseling participants with referrals to community programs.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Promotes breastfeeding as the preferred method of infant feeding.
• Attends monthly meetings and trainings for WIC breastfeeding peer counselors.
• Recruits pregnant women who intend to breastfeed and would like to have PCP support. Maintain a determined caseload of PCP participants.
• Develops relationships and communicates with WIC PCP participants by telephone and at WIC clinic visits at scheduled intervals determined by the local WIC program.
• Gives basic information about normal breastfeeding to pregnant and new mothers, including the benefits of breastfeeding, preventing and overcoming common barriers and concerns, and getting a good start with breastfeeding.
• Provides emotional support to mothers and their significant others through personal interaction.
• Provides information on the effects of food, medications, and home remedies on lactation within guidelines addressed in training.
• Abides by confidentiality protocol.
• Keeps accurate records of all contacts made with WIC PC clients and documents all interactions with their caseload in the PCP database and ISIS.
• Refers and triages PC clients to the WIC Lactation Consultant.
• Attends and assists with prenatal breastfeeding classes and breastfeeding support groups.
• Attends monthly staff meetings and breastfeeding conferences/workshops as appropriate.
• Reads assigned books and materials on breastfeeding that are provided by PC supervisor.
• May assist WIC staff in promoting breastfeeding peer counseling through special projects and duties as assigned.
• Contributes to a comfortable and positive breastfeeding environment.
• Models positive breastfeeding attitude towards participants and staff.
• Distributes food instruments efficiently and accurately according to WIC Federal and state guidelines.
• Responsible for organization and filing of food instrument exchanges, voids, etc.
• Interviews and screens applicants to determine initial WIC eligibility.
• Remains calm and courteous with clients 100% of the time.
• Provides a clear and accurate explanation of the WIC program to applicants.
• Determines applicant’s residency, income, and medical eligibility.
• Schedules appointments.
• Appropriately schedules adequate appointment time for certification recertification, voucher pick- up, classes, diet contacts, trimester checks according to language spoken by participant.
• Assembles and mails appropriate forms within 24 hours of scheduling appointments.
• Provides clear and accurate explanation of necessary paperwork.
• Answers phone in a calm and courteous manner.
• Checks messages on the answering machine in the morning and afternoon.
• Responds to complaints from WIC participants.
• Replies to complaints in a positive, understanding, and tactful manner.
• Makes appropriate referral to supervisor if not able to solve problem to participant’s satisfaction.
• Calls appropriate authorities if situation is threatening.
• Provides translation for Spanish speaking participants for staff members as requested.
• Measures heights and weights with accuracy.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

REQUIRED COMPETENCIES:
• Spanish speaking proficiency (fluency in both written and oral form).
• Secretarial skills to include typing, filing, and spelling.
• Breastfeeding Experience
• Clerical experience in a clinic with limited income people.

• High school diploma or equivalent.

Physical Demands and Working Conditions:
Work is normally performed in a typical office work environment. While performing the responsibilities of this position, the individual is required to have ambulatory skills sufficient to visit various parts of the organization. Requires the ability to reach with hands and arms, climb stairs and occasionally lift and/or move up to 30lbs. Requires sitting and standing for extensive periods of time, operating a computer keyboard, telephone and other equipment for extended periods of time. Travel to other Axis health centers and other local travel will be required. The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.
