Team Description
The JusticeEd Initiative is a part of the Compassionate Education Systems initiative at NCYL, aimed at improving the educational outcomes of children and youth supervised by Probation in Santa Clara County. This initiative operates at systems, youth, and community levels to ensure students supervised by probation experience compassion by the many adults entrusted to support them and are supported on their path to graduate from high school and the many opportunities ahead of them. NCYL partners with the Santa Clara County Probation Department, Santa Clara County Juvenile Courts, a number of Santa Clara County school districts, and other stakeholders to implement this countywide program.
Position
NCYL seeks a Temporary Education Liaison for the JusticeEd demonstration site in Santa Clara County, a collaboration with the County Probation Department, Superior Court, Legal Advocates for Children and Youth, and school districts, aimed at improving education outcomes for youth supervised by Probation. This is a great opportunity for someone passionate about advocating on behalf of students and supporting academic success.
*This is a temporary position, from July 2023 through February 2024.*
Essential Functions
Improve educational outcomes for youth on probation by working directly with youth to identify their educational goals and utilizing effective educational planning and teaming to support achievement of those goals.
Provide individual coaching and educational case management to students, helping them develop skills and capacities needed to champion their own education.
Collaborate with and provide coaching to biological parents, caregivers, probation officers, behavioral health case managers, teachers, and other adults in support of mutual students achieving their educational goals.
Provide youth advocacy for special education/section 504 services, enrollment, school of origin retention, and school disciplinary proceedings.
Attend meetings in the community with students, schools, caregivers, probation, and other service providers.
Input and track required data in a web-based case management tool in a consistent and timely manner.
Required Qualifications
Bilingual proficiency in Spanish (spoken required, written preferable)
Ability to pass DOJ, FBI and DMV background checks
Ability to travel throughout Santa Clara County, CA, among various schools and homes
According to County contract policy, must be vaccinated against COVID-19
Other Qualifications
Demonstrated ability to quickly build rapport with youth and families, especially through virtual/remote engagement
Experience with advocacy, preferably related to education or juvenile justice
Ability to work well autonomously and as a part of a team
Ability to stay organized with multiple work streams
Strong interpersonal and communication skills
Excellent creative problem-solving skills
Experience with youth-serving agencies and community resources in Santa Clara County
Demonstrated ability to collaborate and coordinate services with community agencies in a professional manner
Knowledge of trauma-informed and culturally sensitive practice
Knowledge and demonstrated experience utilizing motivational Interviewing
Knowledge about California’s education, juvenile justice, and adult criminal justice systems
Ability to navigate cloud servers, Zoom, phone systems and other software.

Physical Requirements
Prolonged periods sitting at a desk and working on a computer. Requires ability to work remotely, with occasional travel and in-person meetings.
Salary, Benefits & Location
This is a temporary, full-time, non-exempt position. The salary is competitive at $6,359.42 monthly.
This is not a benefited position, except for as required by federal and/or California law.
Candidates must reside in or near Santa Clara County, California.
