About the Role:

The Marketing & Communications Manager reports to the Executive Director and is responsible for managing and implementing marketing & communications strategies that support DSA’s mission and strategic goals.

The ideal candidate for this position will have a gift for authentic storytelling. They enjoy creating dynamic and persuasive, mission-rich stories and content that speak to the heart of the work we do and can be repurposed across multiple channels.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Content & Creative Development + Communications Management
Produce written content and design collateral for various electronic and print communications, including DSA’s Data Points (newsletter), website, Annual Impact Report, internal communications, and other media as needed.
Maintain a contact database and stay up to date on best marketing email best practices and implement and share with our team.
Help write and/or edit press releases, media advisories, photo captions, bios, community articles, and develop story ideas and pitches as needed.
Create forms on the website as needed.

Social Media
Own content strategy and implementation for DSA’s social media channels.
Create, draft, and schedule publication of authentic, compelling and timely posts, on each of DSA’s social media accounts at the appropriate intervals for each platform.
Provide tactical support and high-level strategic counsel as needed to team members regarding social media needs.
Community management: interacting and responding to DSA’s social media audience, building DSA’s awareness and brand through an engaged following, developing relationships with influencers, and driving measurable action and growth.
Package assets for media deployment and event recap e-blasts.

Project Management
Serve as editor at large for DSA’s newsletter (4x issues/year). Help storyboard, conduct interviews with key stakeholders (partners, volunteers, collaborators, etc), craft main story and other shorter vignettes, assign content to team collaborators, identify photos and graphics, edit copy, and meet editorial deadlines. Work with Graphic Designer to layout issues and manage approval processes.
Serves as lead project manager and collaborator on marketing/fundraising campaigns, event marketing, video production/editing, and other marketing projects as assigned.
Write, edit, and proofread communications across the organization. Provide strategic input, sharing knowledge and best practices with the team as needed.
With great attention to detail, work efficiently and collaboratively on multiple projects, set and meet deadlines, and maintain excellent proactive communication with various stakeholders.
Work with design, print, and merchandising vendors as needed to to bring creative projects to completion.

Metrics, Reporting, and Data Analysis
Assist with tracking marketing metrics, reporting, and activities to help the team measure progress and evaluate priorities.
Track, measure, and report on the level of engagement and actions taken by website visitors.
Remain informed of changing trends in marketing, particularly social media, website engagement, and email marketing.
Provide general administrative support to the Executive Director.

Other Duties
Attend meetings as requested by the Executive Director.
Continually work to further the mission and vision of the Data Science Alliance.
Ad hoc job-related duties as assigned by the Executive Director.
Research and assist with the creation and ordering of new promotional products/marketing collateral as needed.

Skills that will make you stand out:
A Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent in Marketing, Communications, Public Relations, or a related field preferred; or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
Minimum of 2-5 years of experience in the Communications/Marketing field or related work experience required.
Proven track record of managing organizational social media platforms, particularly LinkedIn, Instagram, Twitter, and Facebook.
Knowledgeable in best practices for writing and messaging related to business correspondence, public relations, marketing, and social media.
Experience with content creation for a variety of platforms and stakeholders.
Adept at project management, with proven experience in marketing and event coordination.
Possesses a high aptitude for various social media platforms, as well as the data tracking tools associated with them.
A keen eye for visual design and how it contributes to the power of the message.
Proficient with Google Workspace tools and or Microsoft Office Programs (Word, Excel, Powerpoint, etc), Figma, Adobe Creative Suite (particularly Photoshop and Illustrator), Mailchimp, and Google Analytics. Ability to update existing organizational design files and templates.
Strong interpersonal and communications skills, written and verbal.
Ability to translate complex information into simpler language.
Ability to take direction and absorb information quickly.
Strong sense of collaboration, with a spirit towards problem-solving.
Highly organized, true self-starter, adept at multitasking and managing multiple projects at once.
Ability to work independently with minimal oversight, and as an effective and gracious team member.
Thrives in a fast-paced, high-collaborative environment, and has the discipline and skills to work in a remote or hybrid environment as needed.
Reside locally (San Diego County) and be able/willing to regularly and reliably report in person to the DSA worksite, meet and coordinate with vendors in San Diego County, and complete other various job-related tasks in San Diego County as needed.
Able and willing to report in person to complete work-related tasks and attend DSA events and activities.
Must be able to furnish work samples to demonstrate essential criteria of the position.

Skills that make you extraordinary:
Familiarity and knowledge of AP Style Guidelines.
Work experience as a working journalist or social media/content manager.
Work experience in a nonprofit setting.
Work experience at a for-profit marketing or public relations firm.
A commitment to analytical rigor and “seeking the truth” through data.
